SecuReport: Two Mass Shootings Shake Minneapolis
Minneapolis experienced a devastating 24 hours with two mass shootings — one near a school and one during a morning church service — leaving multiple victims dead and many more injured.
On August 26, police responded to a ShotSpotter alert detecting 30 rounds fired on Clinton Avenue. A gunman with a .223 rifle opened fire on a group gathered outside, killing one man and injuring six others. The attack happened across from Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, which was in session at the time. The shooter fled and remains at large as police gather evidence and confirm that one of the victims was specifically targeted.
Just the next morning, August 27, an active shooter opened fire at Annunciation Catholic Church during a school Mass. The attacker, identified as Robin Westman, killed two children, injured 18 others, and then took their own life. Investigators discovered Westman had surveilled the church beforehand and left behind a manifesto containing anti-religious and extremist hate speech, as well as a call for violence. Authorities are treating this as an act of domestic terrorism and a hate crime.
Together, these incidents mark the 393rd mass shooting of 2025, highlighting the continued rise in mass-casualty attacks across the U.S.
Recommendations for Schools
Unfortunately, there is no single solution that will completely prevent tragedies like these. However, several proactive security measures can significantly improve response times and save lives:
School Resource Officers or Armed Security
Every school — public and private — should have trained personnel on site to respond quickly to threats.Panic Alarms for Classrooms and Staff
Installing panic alarms in classrooms, or equipping teachers with wearable panic buttons, can instantly alert security and 911 to the exact location of an incident.Layered Safety Protocols
Security should be multi-layered, combining physical security, surveillance, threat assessments, and staff training to respond effectively to emergencies.
